Several years ago I did a video on how to kill algae and used hydrogen peroxide. This works, but can be dangerous. In my experience glutaraldehyde, or better known as Seachem Flourish Excel is a safer alternative. I have never killed fish or shrimp using Glutaraldehyde. You can also purchase Metricide 14 or Cidex Plus 28 day and use these. DO NOT USE THE ACTIVATOR that comes with these products. You can dilute them by 50% to get a concentration closer to that of Excel. This works great for killing BBA black beard algae in your aquascape or planted aquarium. These are last resort measures and should be used sparingly within the aquascaping hobby. Try to limit algae by performing adequate husbandry first. My secret weapon for killing algae is glutaraldehyde.

**When mixing wear PPE personal protective equipment. Gloves, goggles, and a respirator. And in a well ventilated area. Preferably outside. It can cause irritation and nausea. However, NIOSH, OSHA, EPA, CDC, and Toxicology Program all state that it is not carcinogenic.
Dose (0.1ml/L at 1.7% concentration and you should be fine). I came to these levels after extensive research and comparing my levels to that of a reputable study done on Glutaraldehyde and its effects on fish and fish health.
I dosed 5 ml at 1.7% for a 72 liter aquarium. I then removed 36 liters and lowered the total amount of Glut in the tank. And then diluted by adding 36 liters back, this is during a water change of course. This leaves 0.59mg/L of residual Glut in my aquarium. This is an insignificant level and when compared to the study poses no threat to your fish.
